Orientation

To stay on target for completing the course in four months, you should take four weeks to view each training block during which you will be working on your online assessment as well as your class project. Of course, the sooner you finish the course material, the more time you will have to work on project activities with that new knowledge in your head.

Your first activity will be to register with the Learning Management System.  To do so, go to the Learning Portal and select the course you will be taking.  You will enter some information about yourself and be asked for the enrollment key.  (This key will be e-mailed to you after you have ordered the course.)  Once you have confirmed your enrollment via e-mail, you can access the course right away.

When you first start the class, make sure you install the student file pack located at the top of the course. Download and run it, for it will install all the data files, templates, and other useful tools you will use during the class and in your project.

At the start of Week 2, 3, and 4 you will be doing a presentation on the progress you and your team have made on your project. A PowerPoint template is included in your Student Pack to give you an idea of structure, so feel free to use it. These presentations should only be about 5-10 minutes long.

Tips for Taking an Online or Disc Class

Watching the presentation of course material on a computer is different than sitting in class. Here are some tips from previous attendees that you might find helpful.

  • Schedule a set amount of time per day to go through the material. Most sessions are around an hour, with a few short ones and a couple that go as long as two hours.
  • Clear out all distractions when you are sitting down for a session. Having the dog run in or the phone ring can cause you to lose the thread of the discussion and set you back an hour.
  • Most people find speakers preferable to headphones.
  • If you find your attention wandering, use the "Pause" button and get up and move around for a bit.
  • Take advantage of the Discussion Board. This is a way to get answers to your specific questions.
  • Consider replicating what your instructor does for the examples in addition to the Student Review Opportunities.
